Speeding Statistics/Trends
- The biggest killer of young drivers is speeding and around 80 per cent of those killed are male
- One-third of all speeding drivers and rider in fatal crashes are males aged 17 – 25; 6 per cent are females aged 17 – 25
- The risk of involvement in a casualty doubles with each 5km/hr increase in free travelling speed above 60km/hr and
- A 5km/hr reduction in speed can lead to at least 15% decrease in crashes.
- On average around 60 people die each year on our roads due to speed-related crashes, a further 375 people suffer with serious life changing injuries
- n 2012, speed was a factor in 24 per cent of all fatal crashes and 11 per cent of serious injuries
sPEEDING CAMPAIGNS
There are many campaigns run by the Transport for NSW group that include "Don't rush", "slow down and give us space" and the "slow down pledge". These campaigns are only run in New South Wars.
In Queensland they are currently running the "no time for speeding" campaign. Previously they ran the "better slow down" campaign in 2011 aim at people between the ages of 18-24 who have the highest involvement as drivers or riders in fatal speed related crashes.
In Western Australia they are running a campaign called "Office of the road safety" aiming to reduce the number of people speeding on Western Australian roads.

Speeding Stratergies
The only way to avoid crashing is not to speed, the faster you are going the longer it takes to stop. So to avoid crashing you should stay on or below the speed limit.
